Every buying guide on FieldGearHQ follows the same process. We publish it here so you can judge our recommendations for yourself.
1. Start with the job, not the product
Each guide begins with the work the tool has to do. For a multimeter that means flame-sensor microamps, temperature, capacitance and a safety rating suited to HVAC circuits. For a vacuum pump it means CFM sized to the systems you service, A2L refrigerant compatibility and how much weight you want to carry up a ladder. These criteria are listed near the top of each guide.
2. Build the shortlist from what techs actually use
We shortlist the products that come up repeatedly in trade resources, supply-house catalogs and technician discussions, plus credible budget alternatives for apprentices. We drop products that are discontinued, hard to buy, or missing a critical feature for the job.
3. Verify the specs
Specifications come from manufacturer spec sheets, manuals and product pages. Where a spec cannot be confirmed, we leave it out rather than guess. Each guide lists its sources.
4. Weigh owner feedback for patterns
Single reviews are noisy. We look for patterns that repeat across many owners: a hinge that breaks, a battery that fades, a display that washes out in sun. Those patterns shape the “watch out for” notes on each product.
5. Name a pick for each kind of buyer
Most guides name a best overall pick, a value pick and a pick for a specific need, such as mini-split work or tight attics. We also say who should skip each product.
Our rules
- No pretend testing. We do not write “we tested” or “field-tested” unless a tool was actually used by us, and we say how.
- Commissions do not pick winners. We earn from some Amazon links, but rankings are set before links are added, and we will name a better product even when it is not sold through our links.
- No made-up prices. Prices change constantly, so we describe price tiers (budget, mid-range, pro) and link to the current price instead of printing numbers that go stale.
- Corrections are welcome. Specs and availability change, so check the listing before you buy, and write to fieldgearhq@gmail.com if something is wrong.
