A vacuum pump does one job: take the air and moisture out of a refrigerant circuit so the system runs as designed. A pump that is too small is slow. A pump that is too heavy is a daily irritation on a rooftop. And a pump that is not listed for A2L refrigerants may not be the right choice for R-32 or R-454B work.

A pump is only half of an evacuation, so also plan for a micron gauge and a digital manifold. Match CFM to the job: 2 to 4 for mini-splits, 6 for most residential splits and 8 to 10 for large systems.
How to choose an HVAC vacuum pump
- CFM matched to the job. About 2 to 4 CFM is enough for mini-splits and small line sets, 6 CFM covers most residential split systems, and 8 to 10 CFM is for larger systems and faster pulldowns.
- A two-stage design and a stated ultimate vacuum of 15 to 35 microns, so the pump can reach a deep vacuum.
- Weight. Pumps in this range run from about 8 lb for cordless units to nearly 30 lb for AC units.
- A2L listing. Pumps for R-32 and R-454B systems should be listed for A2L use by the maker.
- Oil change design. Look for a sight glass, a drain valve and a way to change oil without shutting off.
- Power. AC pumps run all day, cordless pumps trade run time for freedom from an extension cord.
How much CFM do you need
More CFM pulls the same system down faster, but only up to the limit of your hose and core sizes. A big pump on a 1/4 in hose is held back by the hose. For a few mini-splits a week, a cordless 2 CFM pump is a reasonable trade. For a full residential changeout, 6 CFM is a common working size. Techs who do commercial or long line-set work will appreciate 8 to 10 CFM.
Also remember that CFM is not a measure of how deep a pump can pull. Ultimate vacuum, in microns, is. Oil condition decides whether a pump reaches its rating, and a pump that is rated for 15 microns will not get there on dirty oil.
The vacuum pumps in detail
Best for: Residential service techs who want one pump for most split systems.
- 6 CFM two-stage rotary vane, 1/2 HP AC motor
- 15 microns ultimate vacuum at the input ports
- 8 oz oil capacity with RunQuick oil change and ball-valve drain
- Backlit oil reservoir; quarter-turn gas ballast
- 29 lb (13.2 kg); 5.0 A nominal
Why it stands out
- RunQuick lets you change oil without shutting the pump off
- Backlit oil reservoir makes oil condition easy to see
- A2L certified
Keep in mind
- 29 lb is heavy to carry up stairs
Best for: Techs who want a lower-cost, proven 5 CFM pump for traditional HFC systems.
- 5 CFM, 2-stage rotary vane, 1/3 hp
- Factory rating of 35 microns
- 7.5 oz (220 ml) oil capacity; sight glass; angled drain valve
- 28 lb (12.2 kg)
- One year warranty with over-the-counter replacement (US and Canada)
Why it stands out
- Lowest price in this group
- Simple, with a sight glass and drain valve
- One year warranty
Keep in mind
- Robinair does not list it for A2L or flammable refrigerants
- 35 microns is a looser rating than the 15 micron Fieldpiece and NAVAC pumps
Robinair says it is not for flammable refrigerants and does not list A2L, so it fits older HFC systems best.
Best for: Techs who work on larger systems or want the fastest pulldown in a light package.
- 10 CFM two-stage rotary vane
- 3/4 HP brushless DC motor, 2,500 RPM
- 15 microns ultimate vacuum at the input ports
- 8 oz oil capacity with RunQuick oil change
- 24 lb (10.9 kg), lighter than the VP67
Why it stands out
- 10 CFM at 24 lb
- Brushless DC motor and error messages for wrong power
- A2L certified
Keep in mind
- More pump than a light residential tech needs
NAVAC publishes both 2 CFM and 4 CFM figures for this pump, so treat it as a small-system pump. The DeWalt battery adapter is sold separately. See our NP2DLM review.
Two year warranty. See our NRP8Di review.
More pumps to consider
The JB Industries DV-85N and DV-200N Platinum are long-running 3 and 7 CFM pumps. The Yellow Jacket SUPEREVAC line and the Inficon QS5 (5 CFM) are also worth a look. Whichever you choose, change the oil often. A pump with clean oil is worth more than a bigger pump with dirty oil.
Still deciding?
Best all-round residential pump: Fieldpiece VP67 6 CFM Vacuum Pump. 6 CFM, 15 microns, oil change without shutting off, A2L certified per Fieldpiece.

Frequently asked questions
What size vacuum pump do I need for residential HVAC?
Many techs use a 5 to 6 CFM two-stage pump for residential split systems. Smaller pumps of 2 to 4 CFM work for mini-splits and short line sets but take longer on large systems. Larger 8 to 10 CFM pumps pull down faster.
Do I need a separate micron gauge?
Most pumps do not include one. The NAVAC NRP8Di is listed with a built-in digital micron gauge. Otherwise you add a gauge such as the CPS VG200 or a wireless gauge, and read the vacuum at the system, not at the pump.
Are these pumps safe for R-32 and R-454B?
Check the maker's A2L listing. Fieldpiece lists the VP67 and VPX7 as A2L certified and NAVAC lists the NP2DLM and NRP8Di as A2L compatible. Robinair states the 15500 is not for flammable refrigerants and does not list A2L.
How often should I change vacuum pump oil?
Change it whenever it looks cloudy or milky, and after pulling a wet system. Contaminated oil is the usual reason a pump stops reaching its ultimate vacuum. Pumps like the Fieldpiece VP67 and VPX7 let you change oil while running.
Is a cordless vacuum pump worth it?
For mini-splits, rooftop work and quick pulls, yes. The NAVAC NP2DLM runs on an 18 V battery and is 2 CFM, so it is slower on large systems than a 6 to 10 CFM AC pump.
